Drakolimni, high altitude thrills

Zagori means ‘the land beyond the mountains’. Tourism has developed slowly and organically here, but it still feels blissfully remote.

The higher you go, the more intense the sense of isolation.

Wildflower meadows and fairy tale forests give way to alpine lakes surrounded by jagged peaks. This otherworldly landscape is steeped in myth and legend. According to local folklore, the twin Drakolimnes (‘Dragon Lakes’) were formed by two quarrelling dragons, who hurled rocks at each other across the mountains, forming lakes where they landed. This explains why the black banks of one lake are peppered with white pebbles, while the white shores of the other have a smattering of black stones. A more likely tale is that the name derives from the orange and black alpine newts that inhabit the lakes. The locals call them drakakia (baby dragons).
