Halki is named after the copper (chalkos) mines that once generated enough wealth to create Nimporio, the island’s exquisite capital — a mirage of neoclassical mansions marooned in the Aegean. Today, with a close-knit community of just under 300, this tiny island is like a throwback to another, gentler era. Even the clock on the harbour has stopped.
